View Full Version : South Beach / Miami Beach

I just returned from a trip to South Beach. If you or anyone you know is thinking of heading to SB/MB let them know that it is a great time and they wont regret going.
We booked our flight and hotel on expedia.com and let me tell you I think it worked for the best. ($875 for airfare and hotel for thursday thru sunday)
We stayed at the Beacon Hotel which is a great place. It is on 7th and Ocean which is walking distance from everything. The beach is right across the street and the rooms are marble floored and have flat screen TV's. Not like you are going to be in your room much but its still nice to have. They also have some Sealy Sleep # beds so you can lay your drunken head down at night with great ease
http://www.beacon-hotel.com
Next I would like to mention the food. Only briefly however. Whether you do or do not stay on Ocean drive, please make the trip to eat at either the Caffe Milano or the Rendezvous at the Beach. The seafood is excellent! Be prepared to spend $200+ on a late lunch, espcially if you are a drinker. News Cafe on about 8th and Ocean is a great place as well. They are open 24 hours a day and have a wide selection on the menu. It is also more fairly priced. NOTE: Keep in mind all of these restaurants will calculate in atleast a 18% gratuity to your check... If the service is good treat them right.
The nightlife is unmatched. My only qualms were the plastic cups you get your drinks in. There is nothing like spending $20-40 on a cover charge and then spending $12-14 for a mixed drink that comes in a plastic cup a little bigger than a Dixie. I am basically saying go to a liquor store and buy what you like to drink and have some fun at your room before you go out. Otherwise you can go to the PlayWright which is an Irish style pub on Collins Ave. I believe its around 11th or 12th and Collins actually. They have decent pub style food and decent prices on drinks. It is also the only place that doesn't feel like Miami inside If you want to experience THE club atmosphere I would suggest going to Opium Garden, Mansion, Prive, Glass, or Space. Glass and Space are downtown so you will need a cab depending on where you are staying. But if you like to walk then feel free to attend the aforementioned clubs. You can find more info about them here.
http://www.theopiumgroup.com
Finally I would like to mention shopping. Ahhh yes... So you want to really break your wallet. As if you hadn't already. With the lavish accomodations and the excellent cuisine, how could you forget about your gear? A bulk of the shopping will be done on Washington Ave. It is two blocks north of Ocean Dr. and has some of the best names in the business. I would suggest checking out Barneys Co Op, The Shop, Diesel (very cool store) and whatever else you find that pique's your interest along the way. If you like shoes, you are in the right place. There are a lot of independent shops strewn about South Beach with really cool shoes you would normally have to buy online. Some are actually custom made on the spot.
I would just like to close by saying our stay at the Beacon was a great one. They take care of you and the location can't be beat. The scene in Scarface where Tony Montana shoots the Columbian drug dealer in the middle of the street is smack dab in the front of the Beacon. The building has had a face lift, as well as most of the city but it is still cool to think about. If you are going for the nightlife try to wake up by 12. You will regret not going to the beach if you sleep in all day. For reasons I should not have to mention
Thanks for reading
