I need advice on a nice 9mm pistol. I was looking at a S&W model that was fairly priced in the low-mid $300....the make/finish looked excellent, but i didn't get to fire it at all. Anyone have any other suggestions? I wanna keep it under $400....It'll be a gun I carry with me (since here in AZ. its legal to carry a gun as long as its in the open) so I want it to be a reliable piece.EDIT: man those Glocks are so nice.
Oh god, you must not have read last few pages of the gun thread on H-T...I think the best 9mm on the market for under $400 is the Sig-Sauer P225 (retired police agency guns from Germany and Switzerland); Aimsurplus.com sells them for $340, and you need to pay a local gun dealer to handle the transfer for you, so add another $25-50 to that.
The P225 is a single-stack version of the P226, so the magazine holds 8rds. instead of 15. Otherwise, it is the same design. Sig-Sauers have the best double-action/single action triggers of any autopistol IMO, and I'm not alone in offering that opinion. They also have the best, most secure decocker design - there is no chance for the hammer to drop on the firing pin.
Now, if you believe that guy Vash on H-T, the P225 is a POS, and the P226 is a nice gun (because the Navy SEALs use it). Sigh...
If you want to spend more than $400, you can get used P226s from CDNN for around $450 - same dealer transfer fee would have to apply.
MY ADVICE:
Try both the S&W and the Sig Sauer. I would be shocked if you prefered the S&W over the Sig.
Glocks are nice and robust, but the "safe action" trigger takes some getting use to; i opted for the 3.5lb trigger option.

good info, thanks. i'll actually look into some Sig's at the local shops...they have a nice inventory in this town of hicks![]()
i also love my P22, and was wondering about the P99, but not alot of people have had experience with them.
I need a gun.

lol, don't get him involved. My advice: take Kengs advice.
:thumbup
The P226 is one of the most accurate 9mm guns available.

I changed my sig on HT as a tribute to him
Oh, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise - 9mm is more than adequate for personal defense. The key is to choose a good performing load. Any of the leading 124gr. hollowpoints (Gold Dot, Hydrashok, SXT, Golden Sabre), especially the +P loads, will do the job. If you've seen the ballistic gelatin test results, you would know that.

yeah i was tuned into a little of that debacle....but i tuned most of it out
i dunno, i just got a 9mm to go expletive around at the ranges with sometimes
My Sig Sauer P226, still my favorite autopistol (with factory night sights) - it's probably 15yrs old., never had a single failure![]()

Smith & Wesson Mod. 27 (8 3/8" barrel); in my opinion, old "N-frame" S&W revolvers have the best trigger pull of any handgun on the market - period.
